Although scoliosis typically develops in early childhood, mild scoliosis may not be professionally diagnosed until adulthood or it may actually emerge in adulthood. The majority of adult scoliosis cases treated by your chiropractor in Batavia are idiopathic, meaning no cause is identified for development of scoliosis. Sometimes, scoliosis affects the spine due to degenerative disorders or simple aging. Although no cure for scoliosis exists, drug-free, nonsurgical scoliosis treatment is available to help manage the pain, stiffness and general discomfort caused by adult scoliosis.
Since scoliosis affects your spine gradually, you probably won't realize you have adult scoliosis until you notice an abnormal appearance to your back. If you think your back is starting to assume a different shape, make an appointment with your chiropractor in Batavia for a thorough examination.
Other signs of possible scoliosis in adults include a hip or shoulder that seems higher than the other or one of your shoulder blades looks like it is sticking out further than the other shoulder blade. When scoliosis progresses enough to make your chest twist slightly, you may develop a rib hump, or a hump on your back as one side of your ribs protrudes visibly when you bend over. Tilting of the upper body caused by adult scoliosis may also cause one arm to hang past the length of the other arm.
Scoliosis can be painless at first but can cause back pain as the disease progresses. Pressure on spinal nerves and spinal cord may lead to pain, numbness, weakness, and loss of muscle coordination in the legs. Chest deformities associated with advanced scoliosis can impact heart and lung functioning as well, making it difficult to breathe properly.
Sharratt Chiropractic provides evidence-based chiropractic techniques to minimize scoliosis symptoms and help manage your adult scoliosis. Spinal adjustments improve the alignment of the spine to eliminate nerve compression while spinal decompression works by increasing space between crowded vertebrae to alleviate scoliosis discomfort.
Ultrasound therapy using sound wave technology, massage therapy, physiotherapy and interferential electrotherapy are additional scoliosis treatment methods recommended by your chiropractor in Batavia for improving nerve and muscle health, increasing blood flow to the back, enhancing flexibility and reducing inflammation of spinal soft tissues. Clinical nutrition therapy can also be helpful to ensure your body is receiving the right balance of vitamins and minerals for optimizing bone, joint and muscle stability.
If you suspect you may be developing adult scoliosis, please call Sharratt Chiropractic today at 630-406-8088 to schedule an appointment for scoliosis treatment in Geneva and St. Charles, IL.
