Nutraceuticals are dietary supplements containing food sources that offer a wide variety of benefits to your health. They may also be referred to as "biological therapies" intended to support your overall well-being, reduce your risk of suffering medical problems and manage symptoms of chronic diseases. The term nutraceutical appeared about 30 years ago as a combination of "pharmaceutical" and "nutrient" and encompasses an ancient Greek philosophy asserting that "food should be your medicine". As a doctor addressing your health from a whole-body perspective, your chiropractor may recommend nutraceuticals as part of a wellness program involving chiropractic techniques to restore normal nervous system functioning
Nutraceutical supplements can contain chemicals naturally produced by the body or substances found in plants or food that benefit your health. For example, if you have osteoarthritis, your chiropractor may recommend nutraceuticals like fish oil, methionine or glucosamine sulfate/chondroitin sulfate/hyaluronic acid (GAGs) supplements to ease pain, improve joint flexibility and reduce inflammation. Other types of nutraceuticals include:
Ubiquinone--a substance resembling a vitamin that is made by the body, ubiquinone is used to treat migraines, lower blood pressure and improve symptoms of diabetic neuropathy and congestive heart failure
SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine--found in your cells, SAMe is recommended for treating depression, liver disease and osteoarthritis
Lecithin--a fat found in egg yolks and soybeans, lecithin may be effective for treating gallbladder and liver disease, insomnia, memory problems, symptoms of dementia and mild to moderate dermatitis.
Krill oil--extracted from Antarctic shrimp, krill oil is a popular nutraceutical used to help lower cholesterol (triglycerides) that could lead to strokes, heart disease or coronary artery disease (CAD). Krill oil is also being seriously researched as a viable nutraceutical for treating cancer, depression and osteoarthritis.
